Chuck Howey writes: "The story about Charles L.....he acquired pneumonia in 1913 while working on his steam tractor/thrashing machine. He coudln't shake it. Two weeks before he died, he even took a train trip to New Mexico to see if it would help. They lived on a farm just outside Earlville, Illinois.

With his death, Anna Harbison Howey had to contend with raising a family and moving to town. Joseph and Elmira wanted to take the children to raise, but Anna would not break up the family. She had a previous son Eddie born in Scotland; Isabelle b. 1910 in Earlville......; Charles James b. 1912 in Earlville; John Joseph Earl Howey b. 1913 in Meriden Township, Illinois (5 miles nw of Earlville) and died in Earlville. Joseph and Elmira then had nothing more to do with Anna ever again.
