Olen Sponenberg Is Given A Promotion
Special to the (Berwick) Enterprise

Olen C. Sponenberg, of 1606 Fairview Avenue, Berwick, Penna., has been promoted to the grade of corporal, accoring to a recent announcement by the Army Airways Communication System, of which he is a member. Cpl. Sponenberg is on duty as an AACS Airways radio operator somewhere in Greenland, where he maintains radio contact with military aircraft in flight. In this capacity he handles position reports, arrival and departure notices, and furnishes pilots with countless details and information necessary to make military flying safe and efficient.
Cpl. Sponenberg must know radiotelephone procedure as well as radiotelegraphy to carry on at a job that demands intense concentration, split-second thinking and sound judgment, since it is his responsibility to see that aircraft operate on scheudle over the airways. As part of the Army Airways Communications System, which furnishes such control both in this country and in foreign areas, he is making a real contribution to the war effort.

Sponenberg Brothers
Anniversary In Army

Tech Sgt. George Sponenberg of the Signal Corps Special Service, who is now serving in Italy, is today observing his third anniversary in the Army. He had been in North Africa and Sicily before Sgt. Sponenberg has been overseas for twenty-two months. He joined the Army three years ago on March 3, 1942.
His brother, Sgt. Edward Sponenberg, also joined at the same time, and is a member of the Paratroop, Inf. He has been overseas twenty-two months serving in North Africa, Italy, Sicily, Belgium, and is now in Germany.
Both brothers landed overseas about ten days apart. They met in Italy in 1943, when Edward was in the army hospital for an injury received in action.
There is also another brother, Olen, who is serving in Greenland with the Ferrying Command A. T. C. They are the sons of Edna Sponenberg of Fairview Avenue.
