Son of Legrant and Mary George F. Sponenburg was the first born child of Legrant and Mary (Fortner) Sponenburg, who married after Legrant returned from his service in the Civil War. NOTE: In later years, Legrant Sponenburg preferred spelling his name with a "u" (Sponenburg), compared to his brother, James C. Sponenberg, who used an "e".
