JACOB ARNWINE I, married Catherine Julian WELTZ. (Was it he, or his son Jacob, who Washington IRVIN, late of Catawissa, Pa., said was married twice?) They came to, or near, Danville in 1801, perhaps from the New Jersey Colony. He came from England. (When?) His ancestors came to England, from Holland, which, in that previous century, was about the only land of religious freedom. With the Puritans, he came from England to the Colonies. Did his wife, too, come from England, or was she born in the Colonies?

It is plain that the name ARNWINE sounds like the Dutch accent of Holland. Under the Anglo-Saxon influence of England, it came to be IRVIN(E). Scotch blood comes in with the next generation through the ACOR family. Margaret ACOR came from Scotland and her husband from Ireland. Hence, some see in, in the name IRVIN, the Irish, ERIN, as it may appear in IRWIN. However, it is quite clear that the names, ARNWINE and IRVIN, are the same in origin.

This Jacob ARNWINE, the first, as we may call him, had a brother, General Burtis ARNWINE, said to be the most handsome[sic] man in the British Army, in the Colonies. Some say that he was never heard of after the Battle of Monmouth; others that he was sent to White Hall, Canada, and his identity lost. Jacob's son, of this same name, likely bore his uncle's name. Named after a general!

Jacob I, was on the side of the American Colonies. He is said to have given his fortune to help the cause of the Colonies. He seems to have been of the rank of nobility: wore velvet coats with silver buttons.

JACOB ARNWINE I - JULIAN WELTZ:

    1. - Elizabeth: married Stephen VANATTA. Gov. WERTZ, one time governor of New Jersey, was their grandson.
    2. - Ellen: married Isaac VANATTA, a brother of Stephen VANATTA.
    3. - Hester: married a Mr. BRUNER.
    4. - Beckie: married a Mr. HEINER.
    5. - Mary: married a John CHAMBERLAIN.
    6. - Margaret: Born in N.J. Nov. 17, 1798; died on a farm near Danville, Feb. 10, 1893. Married Andrew CHILDS Oct. 24, 1815. He was born June 13, 1789: had 15 children; 9 sons, David being the 14th child; 13 grew up; David, Cyrus, and Hiram being grandsons. (A grand-daughter, Mrs. H. GROOM, nee Cora CHILDS, of Chicago, Ill., has furnished most of the above and given information).
    7. - Sarah: married a Mr. WILSON.
    8. - Bertis, or Burtis. He had a 2nd wife, 14 years old, when he married her, 15 years older than their first child.
    9. - JACOB ARNWINE II. (Because of the many similar names and origins, we pause to give the Burtis ARNWINE family first).

    BURTIS ARNWINE

A county history relates that he settled in the southern part of West Hemlock Twp., a numerous family all gone now. He was a colonial veteran and I feel quite certain that he is buried in the New Columbia Cemetery. (Some say that his mother, Catherine Julian ARNWINE was buried here, also.) Their Children:
    1. - Vincent
    2. - Jacob
    3. - William
    4. - Peter
    5. - John
    6. - Daniel
    7. - Mary
    8. - Rebecca: married George STYER, brother of Cornelius, and an uncle of Cyrus STYER; she was his second wife; first wife was Kathryn HARTMAN, sister of uncle Harris HARTMAN. (end of page one)
Is this where Clark LONG comes in, or was his father Daniel, above?)
    9. - Amanda
    10. - Lizzie, who lived in Canada
    11. - Sadie
There is mentioned an Andrew IRVIN who live on a farm near WILSON's.(?) The Howard IRVIN family, a grandson of Burtis, is he? Alfred IRVIN, where come in? The above John had a son, George, after whome father IRVIN was likely named.

Here is a list of their children taken from his family Bible (123 years old in 1935) and from the markers in the New Columbia Cemetery, where nearly all are buried:

David SMITH married, as his second wife, Anna LEIDY, June 12, 1834. The family Bible records that "there were no children by this marriage." Did this David SMITH come from England to the Colonies, or was it his father? Their early home was located on the north side of the road, east of the CRIM farm and west of the Powell MAUSTELLAR farm. Later they moved to the Aaron SMITH farm.

Note: If you have any corrections or information relative to anything above stated kindly inform Rev. K. E. IRVIN, 2249 Geneva Terrace, Chicago, Illinois. I suggest you take your respective grandparent or grandparents and trace them down for your family, adding your family and connections. As years go by these records become more valuable. It is interesting to know family history and it gave me much pleasure last summer to secure the above facts and figures.
