Heinrich Ferdinand von Zuccalmaglio comes from a very long line of the distinguished and well respected von Zuccalmaglio family. Heinrich is the 11th great grandson of the oldest known ancestor, Clemente de Zuccalmaglio born about 1470. Heinrich was born March 24, 1872 in Krefeld, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, the son of Friedrich Wilhelm Franz Joseph von Zuccalmaglio and Adelheid Stein and third of eight children. On September 03, 1901, Heinrich married Hulda Kleine, who was born May 11, 1882. She died Nov 27, 1945. Heinrich died July 13, 1952 in Neckargemund, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany.

Where to start… I have a lot of information on the Zuccalmaglio family, my family….

My Grandfather Karl Heinrich was the nicest and most soft-spoken man and spent his last years diligently studying the family history and making detailed records. I have a copy of all of them and there are many pages following many lines of the family. He was a Francophile and took my Grandmother Ruth Kleine to every corner of France. But he also made a trip to Brazil to visit the family of Heinrich Maria von Zuccalmaglio. [Heinrich Maria von Zuccalmaglio is Karl's uncle. Heinrich Maria von Zuccalmaglio is the younger brother of Karl's father.]

My mother was Marita, [oldest daughter of Karl and Ruth von Zuccalmaglio.] (she died in a car accident in Switzerland) and my father is Dr. Erhard Knauss (they changed the b--scharfes s-- letter in German to ss), and I was born in Heidelberg and then my family moved to Grenzach-Whylen, where my sister Jutta was born.

My Aunt is Angelika, the youngest of three children of Karl and Ruth von Zuccalmaglio. She lives in the family house in Rheinfelden and took care of my grandfather until his death in 1993. In her first marriage she was married to an Italian, Theodoro Lechner and they have two children, my cousins Daniela and Marco. Daniela died of a heart attack very young, leaving three young children. Marco and his family, with three sons, live a little north of Genoa, Italy. In her 2nd marriage, Angelika also had a son named Serri. They all live now in the house of my Grandfather. As children, my sister and I spent a lot of times in this house with my grandparents Karl Heinrich and Ruth, since my parents traveled a lot and we could take the train to school which was only 10 km away.

My Uncle Reinhard lives in Frankfurt with his wife Ursula and they adopted two sons, Clemens and Lorenz.

I have an overwhelming amount of detailed research from my grandfather and I wish he would have known Natascha Constantin. He would have been grateful for any additional information, since this was his passion.

It is nice to know that some part of the family ended up in the US. I always thought I was the only one leaving Germany at 18 (much to the dismay of my family) and emigrating to the US. I am very close to all my family in Germany and Italy and we meet regularly and communicate several times a week though . . . [social media]. Until Covid hit my father who is now 89 came every summer to spent time with us.

Petra's Special Memories:  "My Grandmother, who lovingly was called "Omami" by her Grandchildren, was the heart of the Family Zuccalmaglio. Since I was the oldest Grandchild, I had the privilege of spending a lot of time with her. Every holiday was spent at my Grandparents' house and all family from Italy and from out of town came to the house in Rheinfelden. My Grandmother would cook incredible meals, make beautiful table setting and somehow had the gift of making everyone feel special. Unfortunately, she died relatively young of breast cancer at the age of 68". This photo was taken in 1959.

The name of this family line, which is deeply rooted in the Rhenish-Bergisch cultural history, is derived from the Italian "zucca al Maglio", which means "pumpkin on a stem". In fact, the coat of arms also shows a so-called "pear stem", because the ancestor of the club's founder, Jacob Salentin von Zuccalmaglio, probably ran a pumpkin plantation in Italy.

In the Italian town of Lucca there are said to be old grave slabs with this coat of arms on them. The above previously unknown heraldic shield comes from the year 1850 of Zuccalmaglio's descendants.
