Barbara Hawks Giezentaner was born in Buffalo, Erie County, New York. She began researching her family tree in August of 1994 with her mother. Barbara said, "Since I was doing this with my mother, I naturally started on her side of the family, searching first the Buffalo City Directories and cemeteries, then census records, then Buffalo church records.... I have made a couple visits to the marriage record room in the basement of the Erie County building in Buffalo, looking up all of the Winstels I could find in the index. I took notes anytime I came across any info, pertaining to a Winstel in Buffalo, even before I could connect to "my" Winstels. I just knew that I would eventually find a connection." "I knew Franz and your Louis had to be related, but I did not know how until I located the Hayna church records, a couple of years ago. In Germans to America, I found the immigration info for Louis. He sailed from Antwerp on the [Ship] WAESLAND, arriving in New York 14 April 1889. Travelling with him was Marga, Josef, Louise, Caroline, Ludwig, Maria, & Eliasb. My poor Franz was the only Winstel, except for his wife and children, in Buffalo, until more than 10 years after his death, when Louis [Johann Ludwig Winstel, his brother] arrived." "I feel especially close to the Winstel line, as my maternal grandmother, Marie Barbara Winstel Holmes, was a Winstel and we share a name; and the drama of Franz and his family: He comes alone to Buffalo (was he sent, or was it his choice to come? And why Buffalo?), marries the adopted daughter of the family he lives with when he arrives in Buffalo. And the tragedy of all those Offenbacher babies dying! Four of Franz's and Mary's children die before the age of 6, then Franz dies before he's 37, leaving Mary with 3 young children, including Adam, their oldest child, and my great grandfather. Adam's first wife, Theresa Lenhard, dies shortly after the death of their first and only child. He then marries his sister-in-law, my great grandmother, Mary Lenhard. Mary dies when my grandmother is barely 6 years old. The grandmother who raises Adam's children is Mary (Moll) Offenbacher Winstel Speidel, as their Lenhard grandmother only speaks German. My maternal grandfather, Marie's husband, had only one brother, unmarried, and he died when I was six" [years old]. Barbara has spent countless hours and dollars traveling, writing, reading, "digging" and agonizing in order to discover the details of the lives of her Winstel family; how and when they came here, where they lived, died, married and had their children....and buried their children. Like Carol Saint-Clair, Barbara is extremely generous to share her research with all Winstel descendants. I would like to express my graditude for the information I would probably have never found, were it not for her. Though it is an embarrassing understatement.....Thank You, Barbara |
