At about 9:30 o'clock Sunday morning
Nelson BENEDICT dropped dead on the
sidewalk in front of the Canaan House
on State street. He had been down to
the post office and was on his way
home when he was seized with apoplexy.
Dr. WOOD was summoned at once but
life was extinct before his arrival.
He had seemed in usual good spirits, talk-
ing with people down town and at
home before he left and his sudden
death was a severe schock to his
family and friends.
Deceased was born January 27, 1843,
in Fulton county, Ohio, and was
married in 1871 to Anna SARGENT of
Morenci, Mich., who survives him. He
was a veteran in the civil war, having
served in the 18th Mich. Infantry from
1862 to the close of the war. He was
captured at Athens, GA., and held a
prisoner in an Alabama prison for 6
months.
In 1882 he settled on a 20 acre farm in
the southeast part of this township
where he lived up to a few years ago
when he moved into this village, locat-
ing on Courtland street near the
school house. He had lived in Oceana
county near Shelby previously to com-
ing to Hart township.
Besides his wife he leaves two
brothers and one sister, Herman of
Grand Rapids, Hiram of Colorado
Springs, Colo., and Mrs. Lorinda VAN-
WORMER of Jefferson, Mich., and a son
Harlan BENEDICT, who lives in Iowa.
Mr. BENEDICT was a quiet home loving
man and had many friends who held
him in high esteem. The sorrowing
relatives have the deepest sympathy of
everyone in their dark hour.
The remains were taken to Morenci,
Mich., Wednesday morning for burial.
[ELECTA E (KNAPP) BENEDICT]
BENEDICT--At the residence of her
son Hiram, in the township of Cam-
bria, Mrs. S. BENEDICT, March 11, 1880.
She was an old and respected resi-
dent of the locality, and will be regret-
ted not only by a large circle of rela-
tives but by friends to whom she has
been endeared by many associations.
Mother the twilight hour has come,
And the sun sinks low in the west,
The work of the weary day is done,
Enter into the promised rest.
