DEATH OF EPHRAIM SARGENT

Ephraim SARGENT, a Gorham pioneer,
died Monday night at the residence of his
son Seymour--the old homestead--after
but three days' illness. Up to the time of
his last sickness he was a man remarka-
bly well preserved considering his ad-
vanced age. The funeral occurred at the
Morenci M.E. church, of which he had
been a quite regular attendant, on Wed-
nesday afternoon, and the body was
buried in Oak Grove cemetery.

Mr. SARGENT was born in Rutland Co.,
Vt., March 19, 1808, and hence his life
had extended over the long period of 88
years, 7 months and 7 days. He was twice
married--the first time to Huldah COLLINS,
in 1829. She died in 1845. To them
were born seven children, all of whom are
living except one, the oldest, Charles, who
died Aug. 23, 1894. His second wife was
Phoebe BALL and they were married in
1847. To them were born seven children,
all of whom are living.

In 1833 he moved from New York to
what is now called Gorham township and
settled on a farm of 80 acres, which he
bought in 1836 and for which he paid
$250. He cleared and improved his farm
and liberally educated his large family of
children. The living grandchildren num-
ber fourteen. A lover of music he played
the violin with no slight skill, and in pio-
neer days he was widely known as a
musician of that kind. In early life he
united with the Christian church.

Among men his character for honesty
and integrity was never questioned, and
he possessed the respect of all who knew
him--beloved in the home and a good
neighbor. He will be greatly missed in
the community where he lived.

--The children wish to extend their
heartfelt thanks to the neighbors and
friends for the assistance which they gave
during the short illness of their dear
father, also to their choir for their beautiful
selections, and to the McKENZIE family.

"We started together in life's early day,
Though thorns mid flowers in our pathway
were strewn;
Now faint and weary she sleeps by the way
And leaves me to finish my journey alone.
