Etta R Lewis was born Dec 7, 1848 in Elmira, Chemung Co, New York, the daughter of Jacob H Lewis, b. New York July 8, 1832, the son of Elias Lewis and Mary LaRue. Jacob and his parents are all buried in Van Buren Co, Michigan.

Etta first married Charles W Hoyt on Jan 28, 1868 in Keller, Van Buren Co, Michigan. They had two children, Lillian M and William Hoyt. Charles divorced Etta in 1874 and raised his children. Etta married second to Jesse Rodman Casterline about 1875. They had two children, Jessie M Casterline b. July 21, 1884 and Lorton R. Casterline, or Lester Lorton, often called "Laurte" on Nov 22, 1887. Etta died Jan 25, 1914 in Hand County, South Dakota. Jesse Casterline, although a resident of Hand Co, South Dakota, died in 1919, in Clinton, Macomb Co, Michigan.
