Biography
GEORGE W. AVERY, of the firm of Avery & McDowell, dealers in general supplies, hardware, etc., Hunnewell, Sumner County, is a native of the State of NY, and was born in 1848. His early life was spent in school. At the age of sixteen, he went to learn the machinist's trade, at which he continued five years. He was next in the grocery business in Buffalo, N. Y., two years. He then came to Baxter Springs, Kansas, where he was in the grocery business for one year. He then returned to Buffalo, where he was for one year in the insurance business. He was next at Livonia Station, N. Y., managing a farm. He then came West to Hunnewell in 1880, and opened his present business. He took his present partner Mr. McDowell, in 1882. Mr. Avery owns two farms of 160 acres each, all under fence. He owns three residences, and one business house, and a half interest in two other houses. In 1872 he married Mrs. Annie Fitzgerald, of Livonia Station, N. Y., by whom he has one child living - Newton Avery. Annie, deceased. Mrs. Avery was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Cherokee Strip Cow Punchers Association
September 13, 1925 - Cowboy campfires blazed once more on the 101 Ranch this last Sunday and Monday as the Cherokee Strip cow Punchers' association held its fifth annual reunion. Old-timers repeated the oft-told tales of other years with a new gusto as these cowboys of the years prior to 893 gathered once more on old stamping grounds from all parts of the state.
Here were assembled the men who had ridden the Chisholm trail, who knew Pat Hennessey and Bat Masterson and Jesse Chisholm personally, who visited Abilene and Dodge City and Caldwell when they were wide open border, cowboy towns-the ends of the railroads-who had driven the herds from Texas to KS, cut the wire fences of the persistent homesteaders and then protected them against Indian attacks-men who, because of their lives in the open are still young men in physique today despite the fact that they are grizzled veterans.

September 11, 1930 - "CowBoy Hill" - 101 Ranch - Reunion on Cowboy hill on the south bank of the Salt Fork River at the ranch.
"Men who carved and rode the early day trials across OK, and marked them with the graves of their comrades---the cowboys-have added a most illustrious chapter to the recent controversy over where the Chisholm Trail crosses Oklahoma……Took pencils in hand at the Labor Day meeting and marked out the two trails that have brought on a controversy in northwest Oklahoma……John I. Miller, of Enid, J. W. Durst, of Goodnight, C. C. Smith, of Loyal, John McBrain, of Eddy, Frank Eaton of Perkins and G. N. Avery, of Cedar Grove, N. J., all in Oklahoma long before it was Opened for settlement, riding mustangs when it was not the safest occupation in the world, marked out the trails……passed a resolution requesting the state highway department to place suitable markers along U. S. Highway 81 along the Jesse Chisholm Trial……… G. N. Avery, who rode he trails in he early days, later remaining for the development of the country, has moved back to Cedar Grove, New Jersey, but he motored all the way to Ponca City Labor day to attend the reunion of the cow punchers."
