Originally occupied by the Onondaga indians, one of the Five Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. John Cary owned land northeast of LaFayette, sandwiched between Buttermilk Creek, and Apulia Road, just north of the Apulia and Bush roads intersection. After his death in 1854, Reuben Cary, his son, continued to live on the land until the end of 1864. See Below

These photos below show the approximate location where John and Hannah Cary lived with their 7 children; Zimry, Martin, Maryett, Reuben, Palmer, child and Electa Cary. All were born in Onondaga Co., between 1808 and 1826. The land looks much the same as it did at the time.

It is believed that soon after John Cary's death in 1854, son Martin and his family, moved on to Medina, Lenawee Co, Michigan. Martin died there in December 1857. Eventually, the remaining family moved one county to the west, settling in Ransom twp, Hillsdale Co., Michigan.
It isn't known if Palmer accompanied his brother to Michigan, or followed him before Martin's death, but he was in Woodbridge twp., Hillsdale Co, by the 1860 census, leaving Reuben and Electa, in LaFayette, with Hannah. She died in New York sometime after the July 26, 1860 census and before Reuben joined his brother in Michigan, where he died in Ransom, on September 2, 1865. Palmer died soon after, in March 1868.
Electa married Spencer Loomis in 1850, and had two daughters in Tully twp, Onondaga Co. in 1851 and 1853. She died there between 1855 and Jun 18 1860, although the 1860 census lists Electa and daughter Maria, living in the household with her mother, Hannah, and brother Reuben Cary. |
