CLARISSA CARY / WILLIAMS PENSION

THE UNFORTUNATE TALE OF CLARISSA CARY / PALMER

As Told in Her Pension Papers

          Clarissa Unknown married Palmer Cary July 21, 1841 in Onondaga Co, New York. Their son, Sheldon A Cary was born about 1844, and son Seymour F Cary was born in May 1850, both in Onondaga Co., New York. Between 1850 and 1860, they migrated to Woodbridge twp., Hillsdale Co, Michigan. Palmer died in 1868. Two years later, in the 1870 census, she is living in adjacent Ransom twp., and in 1900, she is again in Woodbridge township, living with the minister Emmet Mason's family. Clarissa died January 31, 1906.

          The later part of her life was difficult for Clarissa. According to the papers she filed for a "Mother's Pension" on her son, Sheldon A Cary's service, she became destitute and lived by means of the charity of others. The application for pension and the affidavits tell the details of her sad circumstances.

Eastern Div., Mothers or., No. 467125.
Clarissa Williams, Sheldon Cary, Co F, 18 Mich Vol Inf. Special Examination Division, Bureau of Pensions. Washington, Feb 9, 1904. E. L. Bartlett, Special Examiner at Hillsdale, Mich;

GENERAL AFFIDAVIT,
State of Michigan, County of Hillsdale. In the matter of Mrs. Clarissa Williams.

          On this Fifth day of October, A.D. 1903, personally appeared before me, a Notary Public in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oaths Frank E. Russell, aged 45 years, a resident of Woodbridge Township, in the County of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, whose Post-Office address is Frontier, Michigan, declares in relation to aforesaid case as follows:

          Clarissa Williams at the time of filing her claim in July, 1890, was living at and had three houses and lots at Montpelier, Ohio, worth in all about Nine Hundred and Fifty Dollars being then very sick and the income from said property would not support her. Then on the promise of her grandson Delbert Cary to support her, she turned the most of the property to him. About five years later he turned her out and refused to support her. Since then she has not had any income for her support except what little work she could do and the help of her neighbors. The County has and is not paying for part of her support. We have lived near her and know her circumstances during this time. She having moved to this place a short time after her sickness referred to and know the same to be the facts.

          There was no written agreement between her and her grand son and all the income she had was her support, she living with him as one of his family. She had a few household goods left when he turned her out and has them yet. She deeded all her real estate to said grand son at the time she applied for pension in July 1890.

Witnesses have testified as follows:

          Name Chauncey Havens, PO address, Frontier, Michigan, in affidavit executed October 17, 1903, before Frank L. Hayner, an N. P. in Hillsdale Co, Michigan, that at the time of filing her claim in July, 1890, claimant was living at Montpelier, Mich (sic) and owned three houses and lots worth about $950. On the promise of her grandson, Delbert Cary to support her, she deeded the property to him. About five years later he turned her out and refused to support her, since which time she has had no income except what she could earn and what the neighbers and the county contributed. There was no written agreement between her and her grandson.

          Name Frank E. Russell, PO address, Frontier, Mich, in affidavit executed October 17, 1903. before Frank L. Hayner, a N. P. in Hillsdale Co, Mich. A joint affidavit with Havens. Please take claimants affidavit as its actual and rental value of property. Did the grandson have any legal claim to income prior to date of transfer? Please cross examine affiants. By order of the chief of the Board of Review.

Sir:

Please refer this letter to a special examiner with instructions to ascertain the reliablility of the testimony indicated below. The principal points at issue is the actual and rental value of claimants property in 1890 and since amount of income. Claimants address, Frontier, Hillsdale Co, Mich. Claimant alleges that at date of filing her claim July 22, 1890, she owned three houses and lots in Montpelier, Mich (sic), worth about nine hundred dollars. She lived in one and rented the other two at $7.00 per month. Was taken sick and her income was not sufficient to support her. Her grandson offerred to care for her on condition she deed the property to him which she did. After about five years, her grandson drove her away and she was obliged to depend on others. The following is a summary of the material facts in the case: Act, June 27, 1890. Claim filed July 22, 1890, and another August 4, 1903. Former claim rejected on the ground that the claimant re-married prior to the passage of the act of June 27, 1890. Re-opened Septr 3, 1903, under decision of June 21, 1899. Elizabeth Darling, mother Franklin Richard, Vol X, p 244 PD. Claimant re-married May 21, 1871. Second Husband died April 16, 1882. Soldier died in service January 28, 1864.
